Low- and mid-range projects usually cost between $1,200 and $7,000, including installation, according to Improvenet.com. Stock cabinets of the shelf, like those found at home centers, are the lowest priced—but have limited styles and finishes (and can start as low as $500). Semi-custom versions you can order through manufacturers will give you more options — wood types, finishes, and size — are more middle-range. Custom cabinets, of course, will give you the most quality for your buck. It's worth noting, though, that in most cases, countertops are sold separately—and they'll set you back at least $2,000.

Ditching the Boring Flooring

Vinyl and linoleum flooring have come a long way over the last few years, and they're the cheapest way to cover your floor—averaging $1,694, according to HomeAdvisor. Ceramic or porcelain tile will cost at least $1,800, but they hold up well and come in all kinds of colors and patterns. Marble and other stone tile range widely in price, but expect to pay $2,300 and up. If you want to splurge and keep your toes comfy on cool tile, an extra $675 to $1,045 will get you in-flooring heating.

If You're On a Budget

It doesn't take a lot of money to liven up the walls with a new coat of paint, or brighten up the room with new light fixtures. If the tile in your shower is looking shoddy and the grout is cracking, bring the tile alive by removing and replacing the grout, which starts around $500. Some tubs and showers can be replaced with a new model for about $500. Or replace an ugly mirror with a stylish one for $200 and up.
